Academic Editing

There are all sorts of scholarly and academic editing. Most often, I edit scholarly articles and dissertations for academics. I’ve worked with many academics who are also English language learners. I have also tutored and coached academics, and edited curriculum vitae, personal statements, and promotion and tenure documents. I’ve even indexed two edited collections!

Articles and Dissertations

When I engage in academic editing, I correct grammar and sentence structure, improve the readability of the text, and edit for specific styles required by journals and publishers (such as APA, Chicago, IEEE, MLA). For each academic piece, I prefer to do a minimum of three editing passes to be thorough: the first read is for me to edit obvious errors, note any specific areas or kinds of work that need to be done, and familiarize myself with the content. Then I do a deep edit, going through the text slowly and editing as I go. (Then, depending on the client’s needs, I might do a couple of special passes for headings, citation style, or tables and figures.) Finally, I prefer to do a last proofreading pass to make sure I haven’t missed anything, but clients on a budget have also elected to forgo this last pass.

In addition to the manuscript with edits and comments in Track Changes, general comments on the text contextualize the specific edits, comments, and suggestions on the manuscript. I’m happy to answer questions and look again at specific sections, if needed.

I’ve edited dissertations in cybersecurity, psychology, literature, electrical engineering, and political science for doctoral candidates at University of Oxford, Dakota State University, North Texas University, and University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
